Brandon Shackelford

Software engineer with 15+ years of experience building product UI, including over 6 years leading Design Systems development. Driven by creating systems that let engineers and designers ship consistent, accessible, globally-ready interfaces. Proven track record of taking projects from concept through rollout — architecting compositional React component patterns, design tokens, theming, and layout primitives — with a strong focus on developer experience. Adept at working cross-functionally, partnering closely with the teams who rely on these systems to solve real, day-to-day pain points and drive adoption. Committed to building developer tooling, alongside the broader team, that boosts velocity without sacrificing a high quality bar.

Experience

Docusign

Oct. 2020 – Present

Lead Software Engineer

Lead engineer on the Design Systems team, building the React & TypeScript component library that powers UI across Docusign’s entire product suite. I own the architecture behind our compositional component patterns and partner closely with design to keep the system consistent, accessible, and easy to adopt.

  • Architected a library of composable React components: flexible layout primitives and compositional APIs adopted by over 1,000 engineers across ~20 product teams.
  • Built AI prototyping tooling that turns static design comps into production-ready component code, accelerating the design-to-engineering handoff, plus custom AI skills and an MCP server that give coding agents deep understanding of the component library.
  • Treat accessibility as a first-class requirement, with robust keyboard and screen-reader support and a11y checks embedded in the component workflow.
  • Built the design token and theming layer, driving consistent light/dark and multi-brand theming from a single source of truth.
  • Led globalization of the library so product teams ship localized, locale-aware UI across international markets.
  • Set technical direction as lead: roadmap, design and code reviews, mentoring, and cross-functional partnership with designers and PMs.

VSCO

April 2014 – Sept. 2020

Software Engineer

Full-stack engineer and tech lead on the Web team, shipping Node.js server-rendered React apps at scale across vsco.co, internal sites, and more while working closely with designers, PMs, and other engineers. Small but agile team engineering product, marketing, and internal systems. Helped build and maintain the shared UI component library and front-end standards alongside the Design Systems team, establishing the reusable patterns product teams built on.

Bently Enterprises

June 2013 – April 2014

Front End Developer

Led the move to responsive, mobile-first web across Bently’s sites and built their first e-commerce presence on Shopify.
